Wikileaks as a tool to fight corruption?

Wikileaks is gaining in popularity, and how! The site which began as a collection of confidential and top secret documents related to the Iraq war is massively growing and lately it has had the US government cringe in embarrassment. The latest set of documents to be released by wikileaks – the CableGate is causing US govt and US embassies world-wide run for cover. This set of documents contains – among other things -  cables sent across by various US embassies through the world to the US government.

More than the actual leaks, what I’m struck by is one use of the Internet – which some may call good, some may call bad, but no one can contest it as being extremely powerful. Who would have thought that the “Internet”, developed as an internal military network of computers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA), would be the medium where top secret military and government documents would be released. Tim Berners Lee would be LHAO in his grave. Yet another creation of the US government coming back to haunt itself.

It is surprising how wikileaks website is still up as the US govt is bound to put its full force against the web-site and find any way – by hook or crook – to bring it down. News of charging the wikileaks founder/editor with espionage are surfacing. As on 1st December, Julian Assange the founder of wikileaks is missing, and Interpol has issued a red-notice for him.

What is interesting is that the folks behind the website have developed some counter-measures for this. They have released a torrent on thePirateBay –  https://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5723136/WikiLeaks_insurance. No one knows the content of the files coz these are encrypted and the key hasn’t been released. This looks like some kind of future insurance by the founders against any critical action against them or the website. Call it genius or call it blackmail – this torrent file seems to be one of the clever uses of the peer-to-peer distribution network as well. Hats off to these guys for proving the David vs Goliath story true once again. Of course it remains to be seen whether David manages to evade the net which Uncle Sam is likely to put out?

Can “whistle-blower” sites like wikileaks be used for exposing corruption in the Indian system as well? How proud would we be of our country when we find out that everything from sports to healthcare to education

Today the common man knows that the roots of corruption in the Indian society are deep. With sites such as wikileaks, one would be able to find out just how deep.

PS. – http://sowhyiswikileaksagoodthingagain.com/ – this is another interesting site which shows the “positive side-effects” of wikileaks

Reliance Industries movement

Reliance Industries seems to be headed out in the wild – seems to be heading on the road less traveled. Again comparing the movement of the stock in relation to the Sensex, here is the chart of the same.

Along with 99.99% of Indian investors, I too have invested in this stock. In God and Mukesh Ambani we trust. Is it a concern for worry yet? Let’s wait and see.

The changing moods of the markets

Every now and then, there is a particular sector in the market which finds fancy with investors – retail and institutional alike. Share prices of companies in that sector rises unidirectionally – and most, if not all, companies ride on the back of the industry leaders to see their market cap increase. Stocks goes up based on momentum more than on actual fundamentals. Investors make huge amounts of money if invested in these companies at the right time. And when the market gets its share of enjoyment from these stocks, the mood shifts to another sector and another set of companies. The performance of that particular sector is no longer the kind that was seen in the past.

A couple of years ago it was the Power sector which was in the limelight. Then came the telecom sector. After the spectacular rise and fall of Telecom stocks, there is a new sector which is now making rapid progress in the last couple of months. This is the Banking sector. Both public and private sector banks have seen their share prices rise like wildfire recently. This was further strengthened with SBI’s good results in the first quarter of 2010.

If we see the chart of Nifty and the Bank Nifty index for the last month, the difference is clearly seen. Given below are the 3-month and 1-month comparison of the Nifty vs Bank Nifty. Although the Bank Nifty has started its rise only in the last month, I’ve put the 3-month chart to show how much attractive it was a couple of months ago. That would have been the ideal time to enter the Bank Nifty (of course, this is all in hindsight)

As with telecom, I’m kind of late to catch on to the trend. It may be too late to enter good stocks in this sector – Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank, UCO Bank and Yes Bank look good to me, but they are already trading above my buy price. So let’s wait until things cool down or we get a stronger recovery signal in the economy when it will be time to slowly get in to the market in bits and pieces.

PS. With this post, I’ve also created a new category called Financial Farziwada. Let me first explain the meaning of this word for all those not faimiliar with Hindi. The meaning of “farzi” is non-genuine in Urdu. So farziwada, means activities which are not genuine. The idea for the name of this category comes from a classmate of mine in IIT Madras, who was known for his investing skills. Even though he was from the industry, he knew that most of the so-called analysts and brokers are out to make their own money rather than genuinely advising retail investor. Moreover, finance is only playing with numbers, which in local parlance, translates to farziwada. This also means that you should not blindly believe what any financial analyst tells you even if “it is for your own good.”

The problem with inductive logic

From the book the Black Swan…

Consider a turkey that is fed every day. Every single feeding will firm up the bird’s belief that it is the general rule of life to be fed every day by friendly members of the human race “looking out for its best interests,” as a politician would say. On the afternoon of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, something unexpected will happen to the turkey. It will incur a revision of belief.

Why should I celebrate Independence Day?

What does Independence mean to you? A day off from work or school, to listen to your grand-parents reminisce about the distant past, to attend traditional day functions in your office or college, or to listen to patriotic songs all day long? Or does it mean something more?

Let us first define what is freedom. According to our Constitution, the Right to Freedom is one of the fundamental rights guaranteed to all citizens. Within this is the freedom of speech and expressions, fredom to assemble peacefully without arms, freedom to move freely throughout the territory of India, freedom to reside and settle in any part of the territory of India. How many of these are being violated today without anyone being culpable of these violations?

MF Hussain has to leave the country in a self-imposed exile because of the constant bickering and protests against his work.

An effigy of James Laine is burnt because he wrote a book on Chhatrapati Shivaji which his “supporters” did not approve. One of the historians who helped Laine research this book – Shrikant Bahulkar – was assaulted and had his face blackened by Shiv Sena activists.

Film makers have to get their films approved from political parties or religious groups to ensure that there are no untoward incidents while screening of movies. The list of such movies is endless – Sarkar and Singhh is King are just two examples.

People settling in Mumbai from other states are threatened and assaulted as they are “stealing” the jobs of domiciles.

Where is the freedom in all these incidents?

To me it seems, the only people free in this country are the politicians and the scamsters – free to go about their crooked ways, making money for themselves and not caring two hoots about the country, the citizens or any one else. Lalit Modi, Suresh Kalmadi, Sharad Pawar, Raj Thackeray, Bal Thackeray, the Reddy brothers – just a few examples of the people destroying the country.

I respect my country and the past leaders who fought for our freedom, but it seems that the current bunch of -leaders- politicians are all set to reverse the effort that was made. No sir, you can go about playing your patriotic songs, attending co-op society meets on how we can all live in communal and social harmony. You can buy flags for your cars and vehicles and throw them away in the mud after the Independence week is over. I, sadly, do not want to be part of such pseudo-secular patriotism.

Link between the Matrix and Inception

If you have not watched Inception, don’t read this post. There are movie spoilers. For those who have watched it, read on.

The importance of the spinning top at the end of the film is a matter of debate. Some people say the spinning top symbolises that Cobb meeting up with his kids is also a dream (he should have waited for the top to fall before assuming that he is in the real world). Others say, it was real as in the end just before the credits, the top starts wobbling (and is thus about to fall). That debate is not the subject of this post.

What I want to point out is the link between Inception and the Matrix.

Was Inception the prequel to the Matrix movies? Why do I think so? Read on.

The major character that links both the movies, is of course Cobb. My theory? Cobb (of Inception) is the Architect (of the Matrix).

Sounds implausible? Not to me.

- Assume that Cobb at the end of the movie is in the real world. United with his family.
- Fast-forward 30 years into the future.
- Cobb has again started designing new worlds. He has now become the Architect.
- Inception is now common knowledge.
- Rogue specialists have mastered the art of inserting ideas into people’s dreams and are now called Agents.
- Enter Neo.
- At some point in the movie, Neo meets the Architect.
- And there lies the link between the two movies.

Sure they may be flaws in the above logic. Would be glad if someone points them out.

Into the wild

Previously I had posted about this movie – based on a real story of a teenager who sets out to “live off the land”.

Right now I’m reading the book of the same name while traveling back to Mumbai.

There are a lot of differences between the movie and the book. The movie simply romanticizes McCandless’ journey and the adventures he had along the way. Nowhere in the movie there is a constant reminder to the viewer of the innumerous perils which a traveler may face if unprepared. Watching the movie for the first time had made me want to throw away my laptop bag, burn all my visiting cards, deactivate all my email accounts, permanently switch off my cellphone and head out on the road.

But the book is more sober and realistic. There are constant reminders to what may go wrong in such a journey. Other such adventurers are referenced who lost their way while following the call of the wild.

The movie (directed by Sean Penn) was beautiful but the book (authored by Jon Krakauer) is responsible.

Between the movie and the book, I still like the movie more. The sights of Alaska have a totally different pull than reading about the dangers.

I surely can’t leave the life I’m living and set out on such a journey. But I hope this book can. I was thinking of an experiment. I was planning to leave this book abandoned somewhere where someone with a more adventurous spirit would come across it and take it forward from there.

Maybe I can leave it in this train itself, maybe in a taxi someday. Someone may decide to follow the trail of McCandles and return successfully.

Bangalore

This is my first trip to the city. As a part of a training program arranged by my company. I arrived with a colleague on Sunday night in an airplane with the auxiliary power unit “supposedly” giving problems. At least that is what the pilot helpfully revealed before take off.

“We have started one engine and the air-conditioner will come on in some time.”

But after an uneventful 1:30hrs we landed in Bengaluru. New airport, some 45km from the city. After another hourse and a half drive into the city and we reached our destination.

Attended the training on first day. Then met up with college friends – it was a good reunion. Good memories of college times. Regret not taking a snap of everyone together.

First impressions of Bangalore? A good city with wonderful weather. Coming from the oppressive heat of Mumbai, Bangalore felt like a hill station. Reminds me of a trip to Ooty in the not too distant past. I can understand how one cannot enjoy Bangalore alone.

Other good points? Property is cheaper than Mumbai. I guess that is true for all the cities in the world. And no offence, but people speak Hindi freely! Auto drivers fleece but are open to negotiation.

Travel is expensive. Haven’t yet had a problem with food. Tomorrow I’m leaving back for Mumbai – a nice 3-day experience, part work part holiday. Hope to come back for a longer trip.

Still to visit:

Foodie joints
